About the Author

Frances Frei is a professor at Harvard Business School. She recently served as Uber’s first Senior Vice President of Leadership and Strategy to help the company navigate its very public crisis in leadership and culture. Not just "inspire" in a "rah rah" way, but by actually giving me tools to do so and to understand the deeper opportunity that lies in leadership for your own development as well as that of others. I’ll start with my bias. Business books are almost never worth reading cover to cover. I can count on one hand the books that have been in the last 20 years. Unleashed is worth it.

The authors go through the trouble of relentlessly editing so that each sentence, paragraph, section is super high signal, and virtually zero noise. As a reader I’m grateful for that. But to want to read it thoroughly also requires providing insight. It’s here in spades.

Unleashed provides both a set of frameworks and a how-to toolkit, delivered in engaging stories and high candor.

The frameworks center on your impact as a leader in enabling others to unleash their potential — which is precisely what’s required in leading companies and organizations. I realize this topic is often handled in the most paper thin and hand-wavy of ways, but the examples and synthesis are anything but. They’re substantive, clear and, yes, unapologetic. It’s a delight.

The first half deep dives into the impact you can have *when you are present*. The second half goes into achieving similar high performance *in your absence*.

Exceptional impact can occur when you’ve designed both the strategy and the culture — that is, created a distinctive focus, and high standards/high devotion environments — such that team members lead with them even and especially when you’re not in the room.

Frei and Morriss have devised tools that accompany each framework that you can use to gauge where you’re at, and how to continue your journey.

When I kickoff work with teams, we often ask “What does success look like?”…for the upcoming build, acquisition or go-to-market motion. Painting the vision, using data as supporting evidence, and getting concrete helps us all get on the same page for what we want to make true. This book helps you ask that same question of yourself.

Unleashed sets the bar for what success looks like as a leader.

I have been a fan of Dr. Frei’s Ted Talk, How to build (and rebuild) trust, for years. I have coached many leaders to the model presented around empathy, logic and authenticity and each of us having an inherent wobble.

Unleashed takes that model to the next level, and offers reflection, stories and practical approaches to not only build trust, but to create a culture of belonging. The language in the book speaks to me as the authors balance the head, heart and hands value of inclusion.

As a leader and a practitioner this book is a dog-eared, highlighted and valued resource.

First of all, the book felt like having a conversation with the authors about leadership because throughout the book they invite the reader to reflect and reconsider the way their approach to the subject. This makes Unleashed a very pleasant and easy reading, yet not light at all as it helps to depict with clarity the day-to-day of the leaders of the future.
As many leadership books, Unleashed brings its own light to the topic and how important is the presence of a leader in the beginning to build a heritage and how equally important is the absence of the leader to empower their followers to make that heritage their own. And of course, diversity is at the core of every chapter.
If you’re curious about the leadership subject and want to explore a more current and future-forward approach, then checking Unleashed must certainly be on your ‘to do’ list.

As a leader in a large public child welfare organization it is so easy to lose your footing and your ability to be intentional with your leadership. This book brings it back with a laser focus by demonstrating that if we really want to be the best leaders then we show up with love. Frances and Anne distill and make accessible the ability for really anyone to do this regardless of the type of organization or level within an organization.

Frances definitely wrote unapologetically. She addresses the issue that needs to be, DEI. This is so relevant as ever. Also I got a she had a chip on her shoulder when she wrote this look.

A must buy/read for all leaders. Great authors. Some of the formatting for jumping around in the ‘figures’ was a bit challenging as. It jumped around a bit.

Prof Frances Frei is a great Business guru helping Organizations and individuals navigate issues around values and ethos within them. You can watch her YouTube videos or listen to her Clubhouse talks where she disseminates key concepts from this book. Great learning !

I simply adored it.
So well written, full of details and practicle examples, it’s better than any other coaches or leadership courses you can get on the topic as it’s not only talking about the topic but it focuses on the increasingly importance of diversity and inclusion and how to include them into leadership strategies.
